Tools for Success

Ways to look at the text to help me understand it:
Making predictions - Making guesses about what will come next in the text.
Uncovering text features – Using subheadings, titles, text boxes, image/pictures, to give me information about what is happening in the text.
Summarizing – Summarizing the main idea of a paragraph or a page to help understand what the text is all about.
Question-generation – Asking questions about the text before you start reading it then looking for the answers as you read through it.
Drawing inferences – Making conclusions about the text and what HAS NOT been said using what HAS been said.

Visual representations – Drawing pictures to help you show what the ideas in the text are.

In our LTI class we have been focusing on different strategies we can use to help read a difficult text. Today we looked at how to decipher the meanings of words by looking at them in context. For this we used a vocab grid. We also used an anticipatory reading guide to help us make predictions before we read and to help us focus on key words as we read.
next we are going to look at text structures - especially in non fiction/ text books - different ways we can find out additional information- like in this example below.
